The provisions of the new marriage Law on the legal age of marriage have not changed, and still maintain the legal age of marriage stipulated in the Marriage Law of 1980, that is, the marriage Law stipulates in article 6: "The age of marriage shall not be earlier than 22 years old for men and 20 years old for women." So the legal marriage age for Chinese girls is still 20 years old.
The legal age for marriage stipulated in the Marriage Law has universal applicability, but the law also allows exceptions to the age for marriage under certain special circumstances.
For example, considering the multi-ethnic characteristics of China, Article 50 of the Marriage Law stipulates: "The people's congresses of ethnic autonomous areas have the right to formulate flexible provisions in light of the specific conditions of local ethnic marriage and family."
The legislatures of some ethnic autonomous areas in China have made adaptations to the legal age for marriage in the Marriage Law, such as Ningxia, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Tibet and other autonomous regions and some autonomous prefectures and counties, which set the minimum age for marriage at 20 for men and 18 for women in their regions, but these adaptations only apply to ethnic minorities and do not apply to the Han people living in the region.
The legal marriage age determined by the Marriage Law not only considers the physical and mental development of young men and women, but also considers the state's population control and the acceptance of urban and rural masses, which is in line with China's national conditions.
