Marriage check ups are not mandatory. Since October 1, 2003, the mandatory premarital medical examination that had been in effect for 17 years has been cancelled. The premarital medical examination has been changed from a "mandatory item" for newlyweds to an "optional item". Both parties can voluntarily undergo premarital medical examination, and not having premarital medical examination will not affect obtaining a marriage certificate.
1、 Is premarital examination mandatory
no The new Marriage Law stipulates that premarital check ups can be done or not, and it is entirely up to the wishes of both parties. Newlyweds can discuss and decide whether to undergo premarital check ups on their own. The premarital medical examination includes inquiring about medical history, physical examination, routine auxiliary examination, and other special examinations, which are beneficial for future marital happiness and eugenics, and have a certain degree of necessity.
2、 Can I obtain a marriage certificate without undergoing a medical examination
Not having a marriage check-up will not affect obtaining a marriage certificate. According to relevant regulations, both parties to a marriage can bring their household registration book, ID card, proof of marital status, and signed proof that they have no spouse or direct or collateral blood relationship with the other party to the marriage registration authority in the place where one party's permanent household registration is located, without the need to provide a marriage examination certificate.
The marriage conditions stipulated in China's Marriage Law are:
1. Marriage requires both men and women to be completely voluntary.
2. The age of marriage for men shall not be earlier than 22 years old, and for women shall not be earlier than 20 years old.
3. Comply with the basic principle of monogamy.
4. Not direct blood relatives or collateral blood relatives within three generations.
5. I do not suffer from any diseases that are medically considered unsuitable for marriage.
From this, it can be seen that premarital examination is not a necessary process for obtaining a marriage certificate. As long as the above conditions are met, the marriage certificate can be obtained directly even without undergoing premarital examination.
3、 Why do we need to undergo premarital check ups
1. Beneficial for eugenics
In general, marriage leads to childbirth. Whether a child is healthy and intelligent must be based on science. Through family history investigation and physical examination, genetic problems can be discovered. Doctors will provide necessary guidance on childbirth to avoid the occurrence of children with genetic diseases or deformities.
2. Abnormalities in the reproductive organs can be detected
Some newlyweds have abnormal development of their reproductive organs. If they marry recklessly, it will bring pain to both parties, cast a shadow over the family, and even lead to the breakdown of the marriage relationship.
3. Beneficial for family planning
Doctors will choose the best time for conception or contraceptive methods for both parties based on their health status, physiological conditions, and birth plans, and guide them to implement effective measures, master scientific techniques, and effectively protect the health of women and children.
4. Beneficial for understanding physical health status
Through a comprehensive and systematic physical examination before marriage, one can have a scientific understanding of their physical condition and also discover whether they have diseases that are not suitable for immediate marriage, such as acute hepatitis, active tuberculosis, etc. If so, they can wait until the disease is cured before getting married.
5. Helps to receive health guidance
Through premarital check ups, it is possible to understand the health and mental status of both men and women, as well as information about individual and family congenital and genetic diseases, in order to provide targeted publicity and guidance. For a very small number of patients with genetic diseases, guidance can be provided based on their condition and genetic patterns.
