What about consanguineous marriage

HOME > Knowledge

Marriage between close relatives is counted as the first generation, starting from the generation with a common ancestor. If cousins get married, their grandparents belong to the first generation, their fathers belong to the second generation, and cousins belong to the third generation. Consanguineous marriage is an act of marriage between direct or collateral blood relatives within three generations. Our country's laws prohibit marriage between close relatives.

1、 Scope of consanguineous marriage

The scope of consanguineous marriage includes direct blood relatives and collateral blood relatives.

1. Direct blood relatives refer to individuals who have a direct blood or marital relationship with oneself, such as children, parents, and grandparents.

2. Collateral relatives refer to people and their spouses who are not directly related but share the same origin with themselves, such as brothers, sisters and their spouses. Direct or collateral blood relatives within three generations are not allowed to marry.

2、 Why can't close relatives get married

China explicitly prohibits consanguineous marriage. People who marry close relatives are easy to pass on the disease causing gene to the next generation. This disease causing gene will cause their children to suffer from genetic diseases such as hypertension, albinism and schizophrenia, and the incidence rate of these diseases in children born from close marriage is higher than that in children born from non close marriage.
