What does the fluorescence of a diamond mean

HOME > Knowledge

The fluorescence of diamonds refers to the emission of colored light such as blue or yellow under strong ultraviolet radiation. According to the degree of fluorescence, it can be divided into five levels: NONE (none), FAINT (mild), MEDIUM (moderate), STRONG (strong), and VERY STRONG (extremely strong). Fluorescence phenomenon only occurs under strong ultraviolet light, and it cannot be seen in normal sunlight during the day or in a dark room with lights turned off at night.

The Effect of Fluorescence on Diamonds

1. Fluorescence affects prices

The fluorescence level of diamonds is inversely proportional to their price. That is to say, diamonds of the same grade have stronger fluorescence and lower prices.

A 0.5 carat J color, VVSI clarity, 3X cut, fluorescent Faint grade diamond is 100 yuan cheaper than a non fluorescent (N) diamond.

2. Fluorescence affects the phase of the sample

In addition to price, fluorescence can also affect the appearance of diamonds.

If the fluorescence of a diamond reaches Strong and Very Strong, it will make the entire diamond look hazy and opaque. There is a feeling of greasiness.

However, the impact here is not entirely negative. In some cases, diamond fluorescence can also enhance the appearance of diamonds to a certain extent.

If your diamond itself has weak fluorescence, only Faint (slight) or Medium (moderate), unless your diamond color is very white, between D-F, it will not damage the appearance of the diamond.

If your diamond color is slightly yellowish after F color, a slight or moderate diamond fluorescence can also correct the color of the diamond. Use the light blue fluorescence to neutralize the yellow color of the diamond itself, making the diamond look whiter and enhancing its appearance.
