Naji in China is the third ritual among the six ancient wedding customs, which refers to the ritual in which the man asks for his name and combines his eight characters to inform the woman of the auspicious signs of marriage, and gives gifts to indicate his intention to get engaged. If the divination indicates good fortune, the newcomer can be included in the family, otherwise reconsider. Because ancient people were more particular about auspiciousness, Najib also determined the success or failure of a marriage in ancient times. Nowadays, Najib usually refers to the exchange of the Eight Characters between a man and a woman to calculate the auspicious wedding day.
The Six Rites Process of Ancient Marriage Customs
1. Na Cai: The man's family invites a matchmaker to propose to the woman's family, and the woman's family agrees to negotiate. After the marriage, the man's family prepares gifts to propose.
2. Name inquiry: The man's family requests the matchmaker to inquire about the woman's name and birthdate, in order to proceed with the marriage.
3. Najib: After the man retrieves the woman's birth date and eight characters, he practices divination at the ancestral temple. After the auspicious omen was announced, the bride's family was notified and it was decided to enter into marriage.
4. Na Zheng: also known as Na Yin, refers to the act of a man delivering a dowry to a woman's home before marriage.
5. Request: The male family chooses a wedding date and prepares gifts to inform the female family, seeking their consent.
6. Welcome: The groom personally goes to the bride's house to marry.
Modern Najib Process
1. Choose auspicious months
When choosing a month, it is often calculated based on the woman's birth date and eight characters according to her destiny, and a suitable auspicious month is generally chosen.
2. Choose a wedding date
On the auspicious month of good fortune, exclude days that are not suitable for marriage, and then choose a suitable auspicious day on the yellow road.
3. Choose a wedding date
The specific time of marriage mainly depends on the most auspicious moment of the twelve gods.
