Mosang diamond is synthesized from carbon silica, mainly composed of carbon and silicon. Its colors include colorless, blue, yellow green, green, and so on. It is the gemstone with physical properties closest to natural diamonds, with a hardness of 9.25, a birefringence of 0.043, and a fire color that is as much as 2.5 times that of natural diamonds. It is very similar to natural diamonds in terms of appearance, characteristics, and other aspects.
The difference between Mozambique diamonds and diamonds
1. The specific gravity is different: natural diamonds have a specific gravity of 3.52, while moissanite has a specific gravity of 3.22. For materials that are not embedded, it is easy to distinguish between the two using methyl iodide specific gravity solution.
2. Different hardness: Natural diamonds have a hardness of 10, making them the hardest mineral known in nature, while moissanite has a hardness of 9.25. The hardness of moissanite diamond is lower than that of diamond, so using a diamond hardness tester to scratch the surface of moissanite will leave scratches, while a scratch tester will not leave scratches on the surface of diamond.
3. The refractive index and dispersion value are different: the refractive index of Mozambique diamond is 2.65, and the dispersion value of flame color is 0.104; The refractive index of natural diamonds is 2.417, and the fire dispersion value is 0.044. Natural diamond fire colors generally have two types: blue and orange, while moissanite has more fire colors. Moissanite has a biaxial optical characteristic, and when observed from the table, Moissanite will have a reflection ghosting, which is completely different from the coronal reflection of single refracted diamonds.
4. Different conductivity: According to GIA's report, 80% of moissanite is an electrical conductor, while common white and light yellow natural diamonds are non-conductive.
5. Different polishing patterns: The waist polishing patterns of Mozambique diamonds are parallel to each other, which is completely different from natural diamonds. Moreover, due to the differences in different directions, the polishing direction of natural diamonds needs to be continuously adjusted during the polishing process, while Mozambique diamonds can be polished along the same direction. This is particularly evident between adjacent facets.
