The difference between moissanite and diamond can be seen with the naked eye. Moissanite and diamond both have a good refractive index, but Moissanite is birefringent while diamond is birefringent. Generally, Moissanite refracts twice as much light as diamond. Therefore, under sufficient light conditions, Moissanite has better fire color than diamond. And diamonds generally have two types of fire colors, blue and orange, while moissanite has more fire colors.
Identification methods for moissanite and diamonds
1. Observe the reaction after the fire
Burning gemstones with a lighter may cause slight yellowing of moissanite, but it will return to its original state after cooling, while the color of diamonds will not change after being burned. However, this method is not highly advocated. Although temperature generally does not affect these gemstones, it is best to be cautious in case of disputes.
2. Observe with the help of a magnifying glass
Due to its high hardness, diamonds will have extremely smooth facets after grinding, and the edges and joints between facets are very sharp. Although moissanite has high hardness, its facets and edges are not as sharp as diamonds; And diamonds often contain angular minerals or features such as cracks, while moissanite often contains needle like features, which can be carefully observed for the type of inclusions in the gemstone. This method needs to be combined with other methods to determine the final result.
3. Methyl iodide specific gravity solution
Due to the different weights of moissanite and diamond, it is easy to distinguish them using methyl iodide specific gravity solution (specific gravity 3.32).
4. View authoritative appraisal certificate
Diamonds with a score of 20 or above have authoritative appraisal certificates, and both national and international certificates can make effective judgments on the authenticity of diamonds. If you are unsure whether your purchase is diamond or moissanite, you can check the appraisal certificate. It is reported that the GIA Gemological Institute in the United States can issue a certificate for moissanite, but the certificate clearly states that it is moissanite, not diamond. In addition, some national inspection departments can also identify moissanite, but they will clearly indicate it as synthetic carbon silica.
